Architectural aspects of the new digital cultural landscapes in Silicon Valley, San Francisco and the Bay Area are the subject of this book. Working within the pictorial tradition of the New Topographics, Susanne Huth explores the spatial reality of a digital ideology on the American West Coast. Where the New Topographics of the 1970s were concerned with industrialization — highways, shopping malls, industrial parks, motels, housing estates, airports — this book turns to contemporary society and its conditions in communities, corporate headquarters, and research facilities on the edge of the digital borderland.
The photographs were taken between 2016 and 2019 in Silicon Valley, San Francisco, and the Bay Area, and are complemented by an illustrative series of abstractions and evolutions of the websites belonging to the companies photographed for the book.
